New Scout Basics – What You'll Need to Get Started

If you're ready to sign your child, you can contact us through email or on the Contact Us page.

Every Scout is able to fundraise during the year to help cover the overall cost of Scouting for the year.

Materials To Start Off With:

  • A Scout Handbook - Will tell you everything you need to know!

  • A Uniform - The Cub Scout Uniform includes pants, a blue Cub Shirt, belt, navy socks, and "Starter Patches" (Council will help you find these). Remember to buy your uniform large enough to last a few years!

  • Pack T-shirt - You may also wish to purchase a Pack 360 Blue T-Shirt (we use these for "casual activities").

The shirt and jacket are available through our Pack, simply talk to one of our Pack Leaders. Both the Handbook and can be purchased at our local Council Headquarters, which is located at: 1325 Grandview Ave, Glendale, CA

Please note: Our "Pack Closet" has a limited number of hand-me-down items you may be able to obtain. Talk to Pack Closet Leader for more information.

First Things First: How to Get 'Growing'

Every new scout, regardless of age or rank, starts by earning their Bobcat Badge (see your Cub Scout Handbook). It's a fairly simple process that will start your Scout off on his Cub Scouting trail, while helping him to understand some of the basics of Cub Scouting. When you complete the requirements, report your awards via our form, and your Scout will receive the Bobcat Badge at the next Pack Meeting!

Your Den

The ideal size of a den is 8-12 Scouts, but some of our Dens are larger. Why? We think large dens are more fun!

Dens typically meet for one hour, twice a month at the Den Leader's house or another neighborhood location. The day and time is up to your den. At the Den Meetings (and at home with your family), you will conduct activities and begin earning achievements and electives that will help your Scout on their journey to achieving their rank advancement. You have until June to receive the rank, but most Scouts earn it earlier.

One of the beauties of Scouting is that your Scout has the opportunity to set goals and achieve them, both at a den level and as an individual. Your den will work collectively towards Rank Advancement (the Tiger, Wolf, or Bear Badge), and at both a den and individual level, your Scout can learn about a variety of diverse activities. They will have the opportunity to earn a awards, patches, belt loops, and pins for Academics, Sports, volunteerism, and legions of other activities!

Your Role as a Parent and Leader

Again, our Pack likes to emphasize leadership, and not just in our Scouts. Pack 360 is thriving because of our exceptional parental involvement and commitment. As the saying goes, many hands make light work, and we are no exception. And we are fortunate to have many, many hands at work!

In Cub Scouting, you will often hear the term "Akela." Akela is a symbol of wisdom, authority, and leadership. In Cub Scouting, Akela is anyone who acts as a leader to the Scout. In a Den Meeting, it's the Den Leader. At home, you are the Akela. So in short, you are already a leader!

We encourage our parents to get as involved as they wish. This not only helps the Pack run, it sets a tremendous example for our Scouts (and they do notice!), and it's a great way to meet people.

If you are new to leading, don't worry, there are MANY resources at your disposal. Pack Leaders are always available. The Internet is full of ideas and how-to's. There is all sorts of training available. And we have an extensive network of community leaders who help us. In short, we'll never let you flounder!
