GREEN TEAM MEETING MINUTES

FEBRUARY 3, 2011

Present : Jon and Monica Breckow, Teagan Carlson, Kris Phagoo, Denise Camner, Charlotte Stratton, Danell Boyle

1. The Green Team discussed plans for the Earth Day fair, including the creation of “passports” for the Scouts , obtaining Earth Day patches and the finalization of fair activity centers.
2. Activity centers were allocated to Green Team members (based on their child’s den).  Although the centers will be planned by the person listed, help is always welcome and we will enlist many parents to help that night.  We will talk to each pack about creating a poster focusing on each center theme.

  • John will head up the CPR information activity.
  • Chris will plan the First Aid kit/neckslide.
  • Teagan and the Tigers.  Animal conservation.  Activity will be a scat modeling project.
  • Danell and the Bears.  Recycling.  Activity will be a basketball trash dunk .
  • Chris and the (West) Wolves.  Water Pollution.  Activity will illustrate difficulty of fishing in polluted waters.
  • Chris and the (East) Wolves.  Air Pollution.  Activity will be an obstacle course to promote using bikes rather than cars.
  • Denise and the Webelos I.  Deforestation.  Activity will be making seed balls.
  • Bart and Webelos II.  Melting ice caps/ global warming.  Activity will be a dynamo that shows the difference between the energy used for LED vs. incandescent lights.
  • Charlotte and Ann.  Composting snack.  This will be the same snack idea from last year, where the boys learned about composting through making a layered pudding/cookie/gummy worm snack.

Considerations: lighting, outreach, P.R.

Ideas for other activities are welcomed.

DECEMBER 3, 2010

Our primary goals in the latest meetings are to finalize plans for the First Aid/Earth Aid Pack Meeting on April 22nd and to find ways to promote conservation in our Pack.

First Aid/ Earth Aid

Each den will be in charge of making posters prior to the event that focus on conservation ( Earth Aid) in a problem/solution type format.  Each center at the fair will be based around the idea in the poster, with an activity based on that idea.  The centers will be run by adults, as the kids will be busy exploring all the different centers.

The centers, along with the den in charge of that poster are as follows:

Tigers - Animal conservation -   Activity will be scat modeling with clay .
Bears - Trash recycling - Activity will be a basketball trash dunk with recycling baskets
Wolves (west) - Water Pollution - Activity will be fishing in pools of clean vs. dirty water
Wolves (east) - Air Pollution - Activity will be a bicycle obstacle course
Webelos I - Deforestation - Activity will be to make seed balls for planting
Webelos II - Melting ice caps/global warming - Activity will be a dynamo  with LED vs. conventional
     light

A Green Team member will speak with each Den Leader regarding each den's responsibility. We will bring back the snack idea from last year's event where the boys learned composting through making a layered pudding/cookie/gummy worm snack.  We will also have a center teaching some basic First Aid techniques.  The boys will make their own small first aid kit with supplies we will provide.  We will try to see if seed balls can contain seeds indigenous to Deukmejian park and if so, perhaps plan a hike soon after the fair where the boys can scatter the seed balls for planting.

Other Topics

At the next meeting we will solidify plans to to have each den produce a "Green Tip" each month to share on the Pack360 website.

Next year we will look into a more "green" alternative to the plastic ziplock baggies for mistletoe sales.

Stay tuned for tips on where to recycle special items and information about how you can reduce your carbon footprint.

We will continue to collect batteries and CFL light bulbs at the pack meeting for recycling.
